CAREER PLANNING WORKSHOP

CHARTING YOUR OWN CAREER PATH WORKSHOP

Tuesdays 2:45 - 4:15
$200 for 6 week workshop
FIRST SEMESTER: 10/12 - 11/16 - SECOND SEMESTER 3/1 - 4/5


In this 6-week workshop course, students will set themselves up for future success by evaluating their interests and personality types, matching their interests and skills to a career, research different career paths and salaries, learn how to present themselves in interviews, informational interviews, and and much more. All materials for this workshop are provided in the cost of the class.
 
WEEK 1
  • Welcome and Overview of Course
  • Take Interest and Personality Inventories
  • I know I don’t want to do _________ for a career” activity.
 
WEEK 2
  • Strengths & Weaknesses + Personality Type = Great Career(s)
  • Using the Occupational Outlook Handbook to research careers and salary information
  • Discussion of How to Research Career Paths
 
WEEK 3
  • Informational Interviewing: what is it? How to do it to learn about careers.
  • Brainstorm Activity: who do I know (or who do my parents know) in the career I’m interested in?
  • Worksheet: what questions to ask in an informational interview
 
WEEK 4
  • College/Trade School/Other: which one do I need/want to do for my path?
  • Understanding the ROI of College/Trade School/Other: is a state school enough? Do I really need to go to an Ivy League school?
  • Majors that Pay the Bills
 
WEEK 5
  • Presentations about Informational Interviews in class.
 
WEEK 6
  • The Path Forward: setting yourself up for success in high school and beyond. 
  • Worksheet: what classes do I need to take? What extracurriculars do I need to participate in?
