ABCs of Literature (K-1)
Teacher : Janiene Bishop
Wednesdays 10:15 - 11:15
$335 per semester (2 semester course)*
*There is an annual student fee for all students taking classes at Pacific Coast Learning Center. Some charter schools allow for this fee to be added to the cost of classes rather than being paid out-of-pocket by parents. If your charters agrees, you may add $40 per semester to your purchase order to cover student fees. You may select this option when you register for the class.
This introductory course is designed for younger students who are just learning to read. The same books and assignments that are taught in our Lit for Littles program are adapted for new readers. Games, art projects, and group work will help lay a foundation for a lifelong love of literature!
Parents will read aloud one book per week with their students, working up to students reading books themselves. Simple homework assignments will be offered. The work load is entirely flexible, based on each student’s ability, and the teacher will work closely with parents to provide a personalized program that is challenging, but never overwhelming.
Some of the books and activities we will enjoy together are:
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
How To Make An Apple Pie And See The World by Marjorie Priceman
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
The Thanksgiving Story by Alice Dalgliesh
The Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving by Ann McGovern
The Most Wonderful Doll in the World by Phyllis McGinley
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Happy Birthday Martin Luther King by Jean Marzollo
The Snow Walker by Margaret K and Charles M. Wetterer (Out of Print, so I will scan this book)
The Rag Coat by Lauren Mills
Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
The Story of Johnny Appleseed by Aliki
Paul Bunyan (On My Own Folklore) by Stephen Krensky
Pecos Bill (On My Own Folklore) by Stephen Krensky
My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett

**Students will need to obtain copies of the books listed above. All other books, fairy tales, and poetry that are not listed here will be provided by the teacher or read aloud in class.
