Elementary Literature
3rd - 5th grade

This class is intended to make elementary students LOVE literature and writing! Using lively and engaging classical literature, students will be exposed to various genre, and will have opportunities to explore literary themes and styles, and to learn to write correctly, creatively, and willingly! 

Elementary Literature

Unit 1 – Introduction to Writing Process - Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

  • Autobiography assignment

 

Unit 2 – Fiction –  Frindle by Andrew Clements

  • 5 paragraph essay assignment

 

Unit 3 – Fiction - Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse 

  • Short answer essay assignment

 

Unit 4 – Mystery/Fantasy – The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

  • 5 paragraph opinion essay

 

Unit 5 – Fairy Tales and Fables – Various Selections  

  • Write a modern day tale assignment

 

Unit 6 – Research/Historical Fiction – The Orphan of Ellis Island by Elvira Woodruff

  • Ellis Island research project & family tree project

 

Unit 7 – Short Fiction – The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman

  • Write a short story assignment

 

Unit 8 – Poetry – Various Selections 

  • Poetry writing assignment/ memorization assignment (includes a poetry recital)

 

Unit 9 – Classic Fiction – The Secret Garden

  • Newspaper article writing assignment

Class Materials

Students in this class will need to supply the books listed above.

Audio books or digital forms of these works are acceptable.
