Trying to not get lost learning Grammar, Punctuation/Penmanship, and Spelling? You need a Writtenburg Door Passport and a one-way ticket to language arts FUN! Our GPS program gives students a foundational sense of direction when it comes to the fundamentals of the English language.

Grammar, Punctuation/Penmanship, and Spelling

In this lively and nurturing class, students will move through different game stations focused on grammar, punctuation, penmanship, and a weekly spelling quiz. Students master skills to earn a fully-stamped Writtenburg Door GPS Passport which comes with rewards. At home, their GPS skills will be strengthened with simple daily practice using a language arts curriculum that is all mapped out for parents.

 

Topics covered in this game-based program include: 

  • Parts of Speech

    • Nouns (common, proper, singular, plural, possessive)

    • Pronouns (personal, possessive, reflexive; correct pronoun-antecedent agreement)

    • Verbs (action, linking, helping; regular and irregular verbs)

    • Adjectives and articles

    • Adverbs (how, when, where, to what extent)

    • Prepositions and prepositional phrases

    • Conjunctions (coordinating and subordinating)

  • Verb Tense & Usage

    • Past, present, and future tenses

    • Consistent verb tense within writing

    • Irregular verb forms

    • Correct use of helping verbs

  • Agreement

    • Subject-verb agreement

    • Pronoun-antecedent agreement

    • Correct verb forms with collective nouns

  • Capitalization

    • Proper nouns (names, places, titles)

    • Titles of books, stories, and works

    • Days, months, holidays

    • Correct capitalization in letters and writing

  • Punctuation

    • End punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points)

    • Commas in lists and compound sentences

    • Commas after introductory words/phrases

    • Apostrophes in contractions and possessives

    • Quotation marks in dialogue

  • Usage & Mechanics

    • Commonly confused words (there/their/they’re, to/too/two, its/it’s)

    • Correct use of contractions

    • Avoiding run-on sentences

  • Spelling & Word Study (Grammar-Connected)

    • Greek and Latin roots (introductory level)

Class Materials

Required Textbook:

Easy Grammar

(parent will chose the grade level book for their student)

Lined paper and paper/pens in class

All other materials will be provided by the instructor

This class requires printing several materials at home. Please have paper and ink in your printer!
